Foreign Minister Receives AU Delegation to Discuss Humanitarian Situation in Sudan

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Mohy-Eddin Salim received on Thursday Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the African Union (AU), Mr. Nasiru Aminu, who is heading a delegation from the AU Commission for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development currently visiting Sudan to assess the humanitarian, health, and medical situation and explore possible areas of assistance.
The Minister expressed his deep appreciation for the visit, emphasizing Sudan’s influential role in the continent and its expectations of further support from its African brothers. He highlighted the massive destruction caused by the Rapid Support Militia (RSF) to public and private infrastructure and institutions, as well as the atrocities committed against civilians following its failed coup attempt to seize power with the support of its main backer, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Ambassador Salim warned that failure to decisively confront the rebel RSF militia would pose a serious threat to peace and security in the region and the continent. He also referred to the historic and deep-rooted relations and cultural ties between Sudan and Nigeria, stressing Sudan’s hope that Nigeria will play a constructive role regarding the situation in Sudan and in regional and international forums.
For his part, Ambassador Nasiru expressed his gratitude to the Sudanese government for facilitating the mission’s work, reaffirming the African Union’s solidarity with the Government and people of Sudan. He commended Sudan’s efforts in caring for its citizens and hosting refugees despite the ongoing conflict and difficult conditions. He added that, following his meetings with Sudanese officials, he had obtained important insights that he would convey to fellow ambassadors and AU leadership. Ambassador Nasiru affirmed his readiness to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries, praising the close coordination of the Sudanese Embassy in Addis Ababa with the African Union on all issues of mutual concern.
