Higher Education Minister Addresses Cairo Launch of “Solidarity for the Future” Initiative Supporting Scientific Research in Conflict-Affected Arab States

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Professor Ahmed Mudawi Musa highlighted the severe impact of the war ignited by the terrorist rebel Rapid Support Forces militia, noting that it caused systematic destruction of Sudanese higher education and research institutions and led to extensive damage across numerous research centers. He stated that despite the devastation the spirit of perseverance remained alive in classrooms, laboratories, and lecture halls, where researchers and students refused to surrender to harsh conditions, allowing academic and research activities to continue despite deliberate sabotage.
The Minister delivered his remarks at the official launch ceremony of the “Solidarity for the Future” Initiative to Support Scientific Research in Arab States Affected by Conflict, organized by the General Secretariat of the Arab Council for Scientific Research Councils under the patronage of the League of Arab States in Cairo, under the theme “Scientific Research Cannot Wait.” The event was attended by the Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Syria and Yemen.
Professor Mudawi affirmed that Sudan’s higher education and research institutions have not abandoned their mission despite immense challenges. He emphasized that the initiative represents an important step in restoring confidence in science across conflict-affected Arab societies by creating an environment that enables researchers to continue their work. He stressed that the initiative must support researchers and academic institutions in conflict zones to rebuild and rehabilitate facilities, ensuring the continuity of scientific output. He renewed Sudan’s full readiness to cooperate with the General Secretariat of the Arab Council for Scientific Research Councils to ensure the initiative’s success and translate it into practical programs and projects.
The Minister underscored the importance of securing sustainable Arab funding to rehabilitate research centers destroyed by the war, and emphasized fostering international cooperation between researchers in conflict-affected states and their counterparts elsewhere. He noted that reconstruction efforts and the establishment of a comprehensive database of researchers and research centers require identifying their needs, linking them with support opportunities, and allocating scholarships for researchers and students in affected countries to ensure continuity of research and contribute to recovery and rebuilding in the Arab region.
