Interior Minister meets High Commissioner for Refugees
Minister of Interior Major General Police (Rtd) Khalil Pasha Sayreen, met on the sidelines of his participation in the meetings of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner for Refugees' Action Program on Wednesday, at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, with the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Filippo Grandi, with the participation of the Commissioner for Refugees, Musa Atrun.
The Minister expressed his thanks and appreciation for the great support UNHCR provided, praising its positive engagement in responding to the difficult humanitarian conditions that Sudan is going through, as well as the conditions of refugees in the region.
The Minister specifically mentioned the field visits conducted by the High Commissioner to Sudan and neighboring countries, which reflects the UNHCR's commitment to dealing directly with the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Minister expressed his concern about the little funding provided for the humanitarian response plan, despite the intensive efforts UNHCR made to mobilize international support.
The Minister called for the importance of providing development support not only to refugees, but also to the displaced and host communities that bear the burden of hosting these refugees.
The Minister of Interior affirmed the commitment of the Government of Sudan to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need inside Sudan, expressing his concern about the challenges facing refugees in some neighboring countries. For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees thanked the Refugee Commission in Sudan for its close cooperation with the UNHCR office in Portsudan, expressing his appreciation to the Government of Sudan for continuing to receive refugees despite the difficult circumstances the country is going through.
