Minister of Justice Meets ICRC President

On the sidelines of his participation in the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Minister of Justice Dr. Abdullah Mohamed Dirif met with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric, in the presence of State Minister at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Welfare, Dr. Suleima Izhag, and the accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, the Minister reviewed recent developments in Sudan, the state’s efforts to rehabilitate its institutions and resume their operations, particularly judicial bodies, as well as national initiatives aimed at achieving peace, including the Roadmap and the Peace Initiative.
The discussions also covered government efforts to strengthen compliance with International Humanitarian Law and the role of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, with the Minister affirming Sudan’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the ICRC, especially in capacity-building, family reunification, and addressing humanitarian issues related to the conflict.
The meeting also addressed the humanitarian situation. The State Minister emphasized the importance of the ICRC’s role in assisting efforts to determine the fate of women and girls who were abducted and forcibly transferred to areas under rebel militia control, and in facilitating communication with their families and reunification.
For her part, the ICRC President reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to continuing its humanitarian work in Sudan and strengthening cooperation with the government, including expanding field activities, visiting detention facilities, and supporting family reunification efforts, all contributing to alleviating civilian suffering and enhancing the humanitarian response.
