Djibouti Welcomes Sudan’s Return to IGAD Membership

The Republic of Djibouti, in its capacity as the current chair of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), issued a statement today, Sunday, expressing its warm welcome to the decision to reinstate the Republic of Sudan as a member of the organization after a period of suspension. The reinstatement was formalized through an official letter from the Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to the IGAD Executive Secretary.
The statement affirmed Djibouti’s full support for Sudan’s return, emphasizing the pivotal role Sudan plays as a founding and active member of IGAD, given its political, geographical, and regional significance, as well as its historic contributions to regional stability, development, and integration efforts.
Djibouti described the decision as a significant step toward strengthening regional cohesion and reinforcing collective action among member states. The statement also highlighted the continued efforts of H.E. President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh of Djibouti in supporting Sudan’s path to rejoining IGAD, in line with Djibouti’s steadfast commitment to dialogue, consensus, and unity among member states.
The Republic of Djibouti expressed confidence that Sudan’s return will enhance coordination and consultation among member states and advance IGAD’s efforts in addressing shared challenges, fulfilling the aspirations of the region’s peoples for peace, security, and sustainable development. Djibouti reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting IGAD and working alongside Sudan and all member states to strengthen regional cooperation and uphold principles of solidarity and effective partnership.
