Agar Affirms importance of developing legislation and laws, mainly in field of journalism and media domain
Vice-President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), Commander Malik Agar, has stressed the importance of developing legislation and laws that are compatible with the requirements of the current phase and keep pace with the major transformations that have occurred in the country as a result of the War of Dignity against the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, particularly legislation in the field of media. Agar called for a partnership among stakeholders, particularly journalists, the government, and press institutions, to serve the country's higher interests. He stated that the workshop confirms the Ministry of Culture and Information's interest in national concerns. He praised the ministry's staff and all those who supported the workshop, expressing his hope that it would yield positive outcome that would serve the media sector. TSC Vice President called for the need to work to provide basic conditions for journalistic and media work, most importantly combating hate speech and regionalism, and engaging positively with issues that threaten national security.
Aqar touched on a number of issues that require addressing through legislation and laws, including conflicting powers and overlapping roles between oversight bodies, restrictions on freedom of publication, as well as issues related to the regulation of electronic journalism and litigation over publication matters. He urged examining the lack of financial insurance and institutional independence for the media, which makes it vulnerable to political and negative influences.
Aqar also highlighted the necessity to adhere to international professional standards, pay attention to the issue of protecting journalists, ensure the independence of the Press Council, and focus on training.
