Prime Minister Meets UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Prime Minister UN High Commissioner

Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris held talks in Geneva with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and his senior aides as part of his ongoing meetings with senior international officials.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister presented a detailed account of the unprecedented atrocities and violations committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against civilians. He also reviewed the Government of Hope Peace Initiative, outlining its provisions in detail, particularly the pillars related to the protection and advancement of human rights in the country, as well as its humanitarian components and the commitments included under those tracks.
The Prime Minister also reviewed the government’s ongoing efforts to implement these pillars, along with steps taken under confidence-building and national recovery measures aimed at achieving the initiative’s objectives, including ending the rebellion and reaching a sustainable political settlement. He said these steps would support a successful transition process leading to elections that enable the Sudanese people to choose their leadership. He further outlined the impediments facing implementation of the initiative and called on the international community to support and back it in order to achieve lasting peace. He reaffirmed the Government of Hope for Peace’s continued cooperation, coordination, and constructive engagement with national human rights mechanisms, including the country office of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the designated expert on the human rights situation in Sudan.
For his part, the High Commissioner welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the cooperation and welcome he received during his recent visit to the country. He referenced his meetings with government officials and national human rights mechanisms, as well as his field visit to Northern State and his meetings with displaced survivors of El-Fashir events at Al-Afadh camp for the displaced persons (IDPs). He noted the disturbing testimonies and accounts he heard regarding the scale and nature of atrocities and violations they suffered during the militia’s assault on El-Fashir, as well as earlier attacks on the Zamzam and Abu Shook IDP camps.
