UN Human Rights Chief Concludes Sudan Visit, Warns of Potential War Crimes

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk concluded a four-day visit to Sudan on Sunday, warning that abuses by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) may constitute war crimes.
Speaking at a press conference at Port Sudan airport, Türk detailed serious violations, including attacks on civilian infrastructure, extrajudicial killings, and sexual violence, based on testimonies from residents in Port Sudan, Dongola, Al-Dabbah, and Merowe. He condemned repeated drone strikes on the Merowe Dam and power station, which have disrupted hospitals and water supplies, describing the attacks as serious breaches of international law.
Türk also highlighted worsening humanitarian conditions, noting famine-like situations in Kadugli and risks of famine in other RSF-besieged areas. He reported harrowing accounts from displaced women and children fleeing Al-Fashir, confirming sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war.
The High Commissioner called for an immediate end to violations, the release of detained civilians, and unhindered humanitarian access.
