MOFA4Press Statement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan wishes to provide some further details with reference to the UN Security Council’s closed consultation on Sudan that was held yesterday, Monday, April 29, 2024:
1. As per the earlier agenda of the Security Council, the purpose of the meeting was to deliberate on the UAE's aggression against Sudan, specifically its multifaceted support for the terrorist RSF militia. The meeting was requested by the Permanent Representative of Sudan to the UN in a letter to the President of the Security Council on April 26, 2024, urging for داan urgent discussion on the aggression.
2. The United Kingdom (UK), which designates itself as a Penholder on Sudan at the Security Council, however, intervened to alter the meeting's agenda and format, transforming it into a discussion on the “wider situation in Sudan.” UK’s move coincided with the revelation by the British newspaper "The Sunday Times" on April 28, 2024, that the UAE had been putting intense pressure on UK to protect it in the Security Council after the UAE’s role in fueling the war in Sudan, through its continued support for the terrorist RSF militia, was exposed. The paper added that the UAE canceled four ministerial meetings with the UK in order to pressure the latter to act against Sudan's complaint.
3. During the closed consultation on April 29, member states demanded that the RSF militia cease hostilities around El Fasher and commit it not to attack any city. They, further, urged regional states to abide by the UNSC Resolution 1591's Darfur arms embargo. They equally advocated for the resumption of the Jeddah talks, unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and adherence to international humanitarian law. No product was discussed during the meeting, and the Council’s statement made on April 27 was echoed my some members.
4. Given the enduring negative legacy of its colonial past in Sudan, it is regreted that the UK, in pursuit of its commercial interests with the Emirates, has reneged from its moral and political responsibility as a permanent member of the Security Council and a self-designated Penholder on Sudan. UK's protection of the main of the financer of war in Sudan, combined with what has been exposed by the British press that the UK Government held secret talks with the RSF genocidal and terrorist militia, makes it a complacent in the atrocities committed by the Militia and its main sponsor, as well as an advocate of impunity.
5. The UK's disgraceful move, coupled by the leniency exhibited by the Western permanent members of the Security Council to the Militia's atrocities and its sponsor, the UAE, will not discourage Sudan from using all available means and avenues to safeguard its people, sovereignty, and dignity. The Security Council's credibility and ability to carry out its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security while upholding the values and ideals of the United Nations Charter is currently seriously tested. Sudan hopes that Council members who believe in justice, peaceful coexistence, and respect for state sovereignty would work together to pass the current test.
