 Foreign Ministry Undersecretary

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Daffallah Al-Haj Ali Othman, addressed in Geneva the high-level meeting of the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which was held under the title "The Intersection between Climate Change, Food Security, Migration and Displacement".
Ambassador Daffallah Al-Haj Ali pointed out that though the Sudan, in the first place, a transit country for migrants and a country of destination and source at the same time, has remained active in all regional and international forums that aim at addressing the problems of irregular migration and the negative effects of climate change. He added that Sudan, as the current president of the IGAD organization, leads a number of efforts for strengthening the region’s countries ability to confront the challenges resulting from the phenomenon of climate change and its negative effects, including the displacement and migration of a large number of peoples and residents of the countries of the region, indicating that this issue will be present during the conference of foreign ministers of the IGAD countries, which will be hosted by Khartoum tomorrow, Wednesday, the 30th of current November.
Ambassador Daffalla, indicated that the participation of General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, in the meetings of the member states of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), recently in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, reflected Sudan's concern with the phenomenon of Climate change and its willingness to implement regional and international initiatives to strengthen joint efforts to overcome current global challenges, on top of which are climate change, food insecurity and displacement. He appealed to the international community to provide the necessary support for capacity-building, including logistical and technical assistance, to address the phenomenon of irregulated migration and the negative impact of climate change based on the principle of shared responsibility.
