Volker Perthes: Sudanese Military Institution does not Object to Initiative

Volker Perthes

Khartoum, Jan. 10 (SUNA) – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, Volker Perthes pointed out that the military institution in the country does not object to the mission's initiative about talks on the political transition in Sudan. Perthes said in a press conference he held at UNITAMS headquarters in Khartoum on Monday that the Sudanese consultations need the support from the countries of the world, noting that he will give a new briefing to the Security Council at the Friends of Sudan meeting next week, expecting that this briefing to produce effective political support to the initiative. He said that the initiative has so far found acceptance and blessing from all the Sudanese parties, indicating that if the initiative goes as planned, agreement would be achieved on some points and before moving to other points in order to provide assistance to Sudan He called on all the Sudanese parties to agree and to sit down to resolve the crisis, especially the resistance committees, as some of them expressed their disagreement to sit for talks with the military party. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of UNITAMS expected that the initiative to lead for building confidence between the Sudanese parties and reducing violence. He explained that the consultations have actually begun, and will include a considerable number of stake-holders from the civil society, the political parties, the resistance committees, women, the youth and others.
