In yet another flagrant violation of the International Humanitarian Law, the rebel Militia has occupied the Emergency Italian Hospital in Nyala, South Darfur, arresting all its medical staff, including doctors, nurses, and the supporting staff, and forcibly evacuating patients from the Hospital.
This terrorist crime is particularly a blatant contravention of the Geneva Convention and its four relevant protocols.
Since 2020, the Emergency Italian Hospital has been providing different forms of critical medical care in Nyala, especially maternal health care, cardiac and pediatric care. This has been the case even after the rebel RSF Militia waged its war against the State and the people in April 2023, as the Hospital continued providing different essential medical services to the war-affected communities in Nyala. However, the terrorist Militia has now turned the Hospital into a military Garrison.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, therefore, urges the international community, especially international humanitarian organizations, to condemn these heinous acts and to push for an immediate release of all medical staff detained by the Militia and its prompt withdrawal from the Hospital. The Militia must also be held accountable for its inhumane crime .
