The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Thursdsy the press statement issued by the United Nations experts in Geneva, on August 17, 2023, regarding the condemnation of the horrific crimes and violations committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia since the outbreak of its rebellion against the state on April 15, 2023. The UN experts' statement expressed grave concern at reports of widespread use of rape and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls by the RSF.
The statement also denounced the subjection of women and girls to enforced disappearance and actions amounting to forced labor and sexual exploitation. The Rapid Support Forces have detained hundreds of women in inhumane or degrading conditions, subjected them to sexual abuse and sexual slavery.
The statement also referred to the RSF's use of rape and sexual violence against women and girls as a tool to punish and intimidate communities. According to experts, some of the reported rape cases appear to have racial and ethnic motives. The experts called for assistance and protection for victims and for women and girls to have access to effective remedies. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns in the strongest terms the crimes and human rights violations that have been committed by the rebellious Rapid Support militia, it welcomes the condemnation issued by United Nations experts and calls on the international community to condemn the militia in the strongest terms and consider it a terrorist organization and hold it legal and moral responsibility before the mechanisms of national and international justice.
