European delegation to visit Portsudan to coordinate humanitarian action
Brussels, March 20, 2025 (SUNA) – The European Commission for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) announced its commitment to increasing response rates to the humanitarian situation in Sudan and calling on donors to raise the support provided to Sudan, in addition to coordinating with the Sudanese authorities concerned with humanitarian affairs regarding statistics and needs assessments. The ECHO affirmed its genuine desire to assist the Sudanese people. The Head Office in Brussels expressed its desire to visit Portsudan soon to assess the situation on the ground. It was emphasized that procedures implemented by the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), including visas and movement permits, would be accelerated and facilitated.
The government delegation, currently visiting Europe, headed by the HAC Commissioner-General, Ms. Salwa Adam Benya, and membership of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin Al-Fadil, met with the European Commission on Wednesday. The ECHO delegation was chaired by the Director of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, Ms Andrea Koulaimah and attended by ECHO's Rapid Response Manager in Sudan, Mr. Alex. Andrea Koulaimah gave a detailed explanation of the Commission's activities in Sudan and its projects implemented through its humanitarian partners in Sudan. She also presented a summary of her meeting held last week regarding the humanitarian situation in Sudan, the issues discussed by the participants, and some of the challenges and difficulties they face. For her part, Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Salwa Adam Benya emphasized that the Government of Sudan is directly responsible for the security and protection of humanitarian workers. She affirmed the need to direct budgets, allocated to organizations and United Nations agencies, for projects and programs to their actual expenditures, rather than administrative spendings that do not meet the aspirations of the real beneficiaries. It was agreed that the meetings would continue in the coming period to further strengthen coordination and joint action.
