Press Statement
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan reaffirms its strong condemnation of attempts to use inaccurate claims regarding the humanitarian situation in Sudan as a tool for foreign intervention in the country’s internal affairs. The Ministry emphasizes that such allegations aim to undermine Sudan’s sovereignty, destabilize the country, and create an environment conducive to foreign interference, ultimately leading to the transformation of the Sudanese people into refugees and internally displaced persons who are entirely dependent on humanitarian aid. During the Security Council briefing held on Monday, January 6, 2025, the Sudanese delegation presented its substantive observations on the recent Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, noting that it does not provide an objective and accurate description of the food security situation in Sudan. The delegation pointed out that the report relied on inaccurate data due to the absence of field surveys since 2022, and that it ignored reliable scientific indicators and failed to adhere to the agreement reached with national experts. Moreover, the report was leaked to the media before being officially presented to the Government of Sudan. Regarding the objective assessment of the food situation, forecasts indicate that the production of Sorghum and Millet this season is expected to range between 7 to 8 million tons, which exceeds the estimated domestic needs of approximately 4.5 to 5 million tons. These indicators conclusively refute the claims of famine and highlight Sudan’s capacity to contribute to Regional Food Security.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that the humanitarian challenges in some limited areas are the result of a deliberate starvation policy practiced by the Rapid Support Forces militia, which constitutes an international crime that demands condemnation and accountability. Furthermore, the Ministry recalls that the same entities that propagated the claims of Famine in Zamzam IDP camp in August of last year, and considered the opening of the “Adri” crossing as the only solution to address it, have failed to improve the situation despite the passage of five months since the opening of the crossing. The militia’s attacks and continuous shelling of the camp using heavy artillery and drones have continued unabated. In conclusion, the Government of Sudan reiterates its unwavering commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people, enhancing Food Security, and addressing the root causes of the humanitarian crisis, while maintaining its firm dedication to protecting Sudan’s sovereignty and independence.
