$70 million dollars from FAO to mitigate effects of floods

Khartoum, Oct. 1 (SUNA) - Acting Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Eng. Abdul-Gadir Terkawi has appreciated the great role being undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to help Sudan. The minister, addressing the ministry’s meeting on assessment of the impact of floods in Sudan Wednesday in the presence of the Minister of Labor and Social Development, Lina Al-Sheikh, the Resident Representative of FAO and the Director of Emergency at the Organiza-tion, affirmed the state’s concern with those affected by floods by forming an emergency committee headed by the Minister of Labor Social Development. He explained that the ministry began to identify and assess the effects of floods and torrential rains, and the complete survey was carried out in cooperation with the FAO through field visits, as the survey was conducted in a number of the most affected states, and the agricultural areas that were affected amount to 5 million feddans. On her part, the Minister of Labor Social Development praised the role being by FAO and the speedy assessment of the effects of floods, calling for concerted efforts by youth, the private sector and civil society to address the effects of floods and torrential rains. The Director of Emergency division at FAO, stressed the importance of cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop the agricultural sector in Sudan, announcing the organization's contribution of $ 70 million to ward off the effects of floods, pointing out that the organization has set frameworks for setting priorities for joint cooperation to achieve food security and get out of this ordeal.
